SHR, IPL and Diode: Comparing Hair Removal Equipment
SHR, IPL and diode are not three interchangeable hardware specifications. IPL describes intense pulsed light, while a diode system uses a laser source. An SHR label needs further explanation from the supplier before you can compare the equipment properly.
Identify the light source behind the name
Ask whether the offered platform uses IPL or a laser and request its documented output and operating modes. For an IPL machine, ask about the filters supplied and their intended uses. For a diode laser, confirm the wavelength configuration and handpiece specification.
Do not build a purchasing decision around “in-motion,” “painless” or “permanent” alone. Those phrases do not describe the complete device or establish suitability for an individual patient.
Compare equipment on a common basis
- Light source, output range and units used in the specification.
- Included filters or handpieces and their documented applications.
- Cooling design, operating limits and routine maintenance.
- Consumable replacement costs and the basis of any lifetime claim.
- Training, protective equipment and support arrangements.
Consider how the equipment fits the work of the clinic. Ask the operator to review setup, controls and cleaning during a demonstration. A distributor should also check how replacement handpieces or lamps are identified and ordered.
Keep clinical instructions specific to the device
A general article should not supply energy settings or tell an untrained user to increase output until treatment feels uncomfortable. Patient assessment, test procedures and treatment parameters belong in professional training and the device’s instructions.
Skin and hair characteristics affect light-based hair removal decisions. A sales label cannot establish suitability for a skin tone. Qualified practitioners should explain the expected response, alternatives and relevant risks before treatment.
Does IPL mean laser?
No. The distinction matters when comparing specifications and describing services. Ask for an accurate technical description of the proposed platform.
How many sessions should a clinic promise?
A universal session count is not appropriate. The responsible practitioner should set expectations after assessment. General information is available in the AAD’s laser hair removal FAQs.
